A Decade Lost, Unprepared

Caregiving arrived in my life with the subtlety of a storm. One year it was my father, whose memory slipped away faster than we knew what to do. Soon after, my sister's world narrowed, and then dementia pulled my mother into the same confusion and fear. The days and nights blurred together, and each decision brought new questions - how do you soothe agitation, keep someone safe, find a moment to just breathe? There was no manual left on the kitchen table when the diagnosis came. I felt isolated and overwhelmed, unprepared for how dramatically my role in the family, and my sense of self, would be changed. There were moments when the exhaustion got so deep I almost forgot why I started down this road. Yet, despite all the chaos, my love for them - and a stubborn hope that there had to be a better way - kept me going. That journey became something bigger than me. It was about surviving each unpredictable day and trying to hold onto my own health. Every missed night of sleep, every fraught meal, and those rare moments of laughter, built the foundation for what became FriendsInTheHouse.

Bryan Jenkins

Founder & Caregiver Advocate

Bryan Jenkins spent more than ten years caring for his father, sister, and mother - each navigating the harsh realities of dementia. Through trial, error, and countless nights filled with worry, he learned firsthand how ill-prepared most families feel on this journey. After seeing the same confused questions and heartbreak mirrored in other families, Bryan transformed his lived experience into action. Shifting from broadcast journalism to caregiving advocacy, he now dedicates himself to equipping others with the mental resets, stories, and practical insight he once longed for. Bryan's blend of compassion, hard-won strategies, and an unwavering focus on preparation inspires our platform each day. His mission is clear: to ensure no caregiver faces this unpredictable road alone.
